Imagine being a Brittany-Mix, under the age of ONE, living in a double wide trailer with 68 other dogs. Now, keep thinking. Think about being bred and surviving off scraps of meat. Then, all the sudden you start to cough, sneeze, and have this thick stuff coming from your eyes. You vomit, have diarrhea, and now you absolutely do not want to eat.
Meet Leia & Conroe. These sweet Brit-Mixes were rescued from the situation described above. They never went outside, neither did the other 67 dogs they lived with. With chewed up beds, couches, and trash scattered all over the house, the pack became all to accustom to the sounds of gun shots as strange people tried to approach their home.
Eventually, law enforcement became involved and seized the dogs. Although we don’t know the stories of all the dogs, we do know that 39 of the dogs went to a Louisiana shelter and Foster Homes were found for the other 29.
When Leia arrived at the shelter, she was not in good shape. Tested for Heartworm and Pravo, and given some medication, results came back negative. That’s when the shelter contacted NBRAN – they knew Leia needed to be in a home with proper love and care. And so would her housemate, Conroe.
Upon arriving to the shelter for pick-up, Leia’s Foster Mom was afraid to name her because of how sick she truly was. Leia still could not eat or drink, the discharge coming from her nose and eyes was still thick, and Leia could not keep any food down and became dehydrated.
Leia's foster Mom quickly got her seen by her family vet, where she was tested for Distemper. Three days later, the test results came back positive. Now, Leia is in the fight for her life and NBRAN is committed to her care. Since Distemper is extremely contagious, Leia is in isolation and receiving treatment, including shots and plasma fusions. Conroe is undergoing the same treatment.
Canine Distemper is preventable through a series of vaccines most dogs get as a puppy. Once a dog has Distemper, it can be passed from dog to dog through direct contact to fresh urine, blood, saliva, sneezing, coughing, and food and water bowls.
