When Kate, an approximately 6 year old female Brittany, came into rescue, she was emaciated and clearly in need of medical care. She had multiple mammary masses, didn’t want to eat, was dehydrated, weak and lethargic.
NBRAN immediately took Kate to the vet where she had bloodwork, a fecal and x-rays. Her blood panel suggested one or more infections, of not cancer, and she had giardia. Further medical tests, including blood smears, cleared her from metastasis.
We, along with the vets, wanted to give her a chance. With some initial medical care including antibiotics and a kidney diet (for the extreme dehydration), she rallied. We then consulted with a surgeon and oncologist for their expert advice on how to deal with the mammary masses. With further tests, she was found to have no abdominal masses (a sign of metastasis) but they did find a small splenic mass. The vets believed the latter mass was found early and that Kate was a good candidate for surgery and a happy life.
To give Kate a normal life, she needed to be spayed, have the enlarged mammary glands removed with clean margins, and have a splenectomy. Kate came through the surgery like a champ and even wagged her tail. All the medical staff commented that she was the sweetest and best girl ever, thanking NBRAN for saving her life.
Veterinary costs have gone up substantially and her care has cost NBRAN $10,000.00. Can you find it in your heart to donate towards her care so we can keep saving dogs like Kate?
